Lt Commander George Edward Cameron Wood was Executive Officer on HMS Jervis Bay and so 2nd in command to Fogarty Fegen. He was due to return to the UK to take command of a new vessel.

He had been previously helping to prepare USA destroyers for future use in WW2. When his own ship HMS Centurion was in dry dock having repairs carried out, he replaced at the last minute Commander Blackburn on the Jervis Bay who had just been removed prior to Convoy HX84 leaving Halifax. Blackburn took up the role of Captain on the AMC Voltaire.
