Missing,
Presumed Killed

I have been doing a little research on the casualty list of the Jervis Bay. One name puzzled me, as I could find no record of the seaman, under that name, on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website.

After a little further digging into the site, using a broader search, I eventually found that John Sullivan, who was a greaser, is listed under his true family name of Thomas Costello. It would appear that John Sullivan was an alias.

Thomas Costello's details are as follows:

  • Name: Thomas Costello
  • Nationality: United Kingdom
  • Rank: Greaser
  • Regiment: Naval Auxiliary Personnel (M.N.)
  • Age: 55
  • Service No. 53311
  • Served as John Sullivan, son of John & Catherine Costello
  • Named on the Liverpool Naval Memorial Panel 14, Column 1
