SS Jervis Bay trophy SS Jervis Bay trophy

My mother Nancy Sutherland (who died at 93 years in 2002) sailed from New Zealand to Sydney, where she boarded the SS Jervis Bay for the voyage from Sydney to England in 1936. I have a trophy ("silver" cup) she won on board, with the SS Jervis Bay in a blue enamel emblem on the front.

She is pictured at the right of the photograph taken on board with one of the ship’s officers.

She was a NZ University Blue Champion swimmer, but funnily, her trophy which she won in the “Horse Races” held during the voyage, was for cutting the longest cotton tape lengthwise in half with curved nail scissors in the shortest time!
